The destination can determine its CSI-based hop distance (as de ned earlier) from the source on all the routes and thus can choose a route with the minimum distance. As shown in the gure, the RREQ reaches the destination device through four distinct routes (note that the links are labeled with the channel classes) with hop count distances 8.5, 13, 5, and 15, respectively. The destination device then generates a route reply (RREP), which includes the following information: type of packet, source address, destination address, route reply ID (corresponding to the broadcast ID of the RREQ), hop distance (CSI-based) and hop count of the route, and list of intermediate devices. The destination device unicasts the RREP along the selected route to the source device1 as shown in Figure 12.1b. Note that during the transmission of RREP from the destination to the source, the CSI-based hop distance eld in RREP has to be recomputed as before. After receiving the RREP, the source device can decide whether to update the route on the basis of the RREP. If the source decides to update the route, it has to construct a route update packet and send it along the selected route to the destination as depicted in Figure 12.1c. This process is elaborated in the following section. Note that route discovery in RICA is an end-to-end process and the intermediate devices are not allowed to send a RREP even if they have the route information for the destination. This is because the route information stored in their route entries may have been obsolete because of the time-varying nature of the wireless channel. This is an important difference between RICA and AODV (or DSR).

Because the channel quality between two devices is a time-varying function, the throughput of the route to the destination also changes all the time. Thus, the primary goal of the RICA algorithm is to maintain a route between a communicating source destination pair such that the highest throughput is achieved. Note that the period depends on the coherence time of the shadowing conditions, and typically 3 4 s is acceptable for pesdestrian mobility. The CSI checking packet, acting as a probe, is used for measuring the CSI of every link that it has traversed. Thus, an updated CSI-based hop distance can be obtained. During the lifetime of a communication session, the source could receive several CSI checking packets periodically from the destination and thus, can update the route accordingly. We explain this process in more detail with the help of Figure 12.1d,e.
